What is K12Planet?  K12 Planet User Instructions            K12Planet demo

K12Planet is a Web portal that that bridges the gap between school and home and allows schools to build a powerful online learning community.  K12Planet provides an easy-to-use and secure school-to-home portal that gives parents and students instant access to grades, attendance, homework assignments, and school activities. Some teachers will also have access to assignment lists and communicate through parent email lists.   In the future, discipline records and student course requests and scheduling may be used in the system.  K12Planet is completely free of advertising and sponsorships.

How K12Planet helps students?

By giving students access to feedback on their own performance, K12Planet empowers students to take control of their academic progress. By monitoring their own progress and taking responsibility for themselves, students can both enjoy their success, and see clearly where to apply more effort. Other features help students organize their schedules and access learning resources.  K12Planet lets them communicate with school staff anytime, from anywhere.

How K12Planet helps parents?

K12Planet allows parents to review everything from their child's daily grade and attendance information to curriculum details, homework assignments and school activities.

Parents can stay easily up to date throughout the semester, exchanging emails with teachers, over and above quarter report cards and parent-teacher conferences. Parents have the information they need to make a positive difference with their children's education, to spot potential problems, to take action, and to plan for their children's success.

How K12Planet helps teachers?

Because K12Planet automatically draws on information that's already in the school's central student information system, there's no double data entry required. Teachers have full control over any information made available through K12Planet and the facility to correct any errors that might occur.

Teachers can communicate directly and securely with parents rather than rely on students to deliver verbal or written messages. Emailing individuals or whole groups, teachers save much time on phone calls, meetings and visits. K12Planet also has a range of web-smart templates for teachers to use and customize.

Possible negative aspects of K12Planet?

The extra information may encourage some parents to ‘micromanage’ school procedures.  Teachers should not need to defend why one assignment was worth 20 points and another assignment, which took more time to complete, was only worth 10.  It may also lead to unrealistic expectations that the test results will be immediately posted the same day as the test.  Teachers will update grades within 1 week of an assignment or test.

How current is the data?

Attendance is updated daily.  Grades will be updated at least once per week.

What about midquarter reports?

We will no longer print and mail midquarter (after 4 weeks) grades to every student.  For this year of transition, teachers will mail a paper D or F warning to parents of students with low progress at midquarter.

What if I don’t have Internet access?

Parents and students may use the school library computers before or after school.
Quarter and semester report cards will be printed and mailed home.

How Secure is K12 Planet?

Only you and your school can view your information through your login and password. All student data on K12Planet is password-protected and safeguarded round-the-clock behind a series of firewalls, in a highly secured and monitored facility.  The online data viewed is only a copy of the actual data, which remains stored on a separate server.
